February 15, 2024It’s also Children’s Dental Health Month, which is all about making sure our little ones have healthy smiles they can be proud of!
Experts in oral health are here to share some super helpful tips to keep those pesky cavities at bay and ensure your kiddos have strong, happy teeth for years to come.
First off, let’s start early! Dr. Frank Catalanotto, a professor of dentistry at the University of Florida, suggests getting babies accustomed to oral care from the get-go. Using a soft cloth and water to gently clean their gums sets the stage for good dental hygiene. And once those first tiny teeth start to peek through (usually around six months), it’s time for their first dental check-up!
Why so early? Well, as Dr. Catalanotto explains, taking care of baby teeth is crucial because it sets the foundation for healthy adult teeth. Plus, it can even impact how well they do in school! So, it’s not just about the teeth; it’s about their overall well-being.
But don’t worry, it’s not all serious business! Making brushing fun and encouraging good habits can go a long way. Dr. Paul McConnell, the dental director for UnitedHealthcare, reminds us that even baby teeth need TLC. Cavities in baby teeth might seem harmless since they’ll eventually fall out, but they can actually cause some serious issues for those adult teeth growing underneath.
Daily brushing and flossing are key habits to instill, not just for the little ones but for us grown-ups too! After all, nearly half of adults over 30 have some form of gum disease. Yikes!
So, let’s spread the love this Children’s Dental Health Month by giving our kiddos the gift of a bright, healthy smile!
