Prince Harry is talking about his recent visit to see his father, King Charles III, who was diagnosed with cancer a week ago.
“I talked to him. And I quickly got on a plane to go see him,” said Prince Harry on “Good Morning America” in a segment aired on Friday, sharing about the moment he found out about his father’s health.
“I love my family. I’m thankful I could go see him and spend time with him,” he added. “I have more trips planned to the U.K., so I’ll visit my family whenever I can.”
When asked about his father’s health, Harry said, “That’s private between us.” His office confirmed that Harry planned to travel to London and had talked to his father about the diagnosis.
Buckingham Palace announced on Feb. 5 that Charles was diagnosed with cancer. He recently had a procedure for a non-cancerous condition, and the cancer was found during tests for another issue. He’ll be undergoing regular treatments, and for now, he’s advised to limit public appearances.
On “Good Morning America,” Harry also talked about how family crises can bring people closer. “Yes, definitely. Families come together in tough times,” he said, mentioning families he met at the Invictus Games.
In May, Harry attended his father’s coronation, but afterward, he didn’t join his family on the palace balcony. His wife, Meghan, stayed in California with their children. They stepped back from the royal family in 2020 and later spoke about experiencing racism within the family.
Harry wrote about his relationship with the royal family in his memoir “Spare,” published in 2023. He mentioned feeling misunderstood by his father and brother but expressed hope for reconciliation.
In an interview with ITV in 2023, Harry said he wanted to reconcile with Charles and William but felt they weren’t open to it. Despite the challenges, he looks forward to rebuilding his relationships with them.
