June 14, 2017The Tequila Sunrise is a cocktail made of tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup and served unmixed in a tall glass. The modern drink originates from Sausalito, California in the early 1970’s, after an earlier one created in the 1930’s in Phoenix, near Scottsdale. The cocktail is named for its appearance when served, with gradations of color resembling a sunrise.
The Tequila Sunrise is considered a long drink and is usually served in a Collins or Highball glass. The International Bartender Association has designated this cocktail as an IBA Official Cocktail.
The drink is mixed by pouring in Tequila, Ice, then the Juice and, lastly, Syrup. The signature look of the drink depends on adding the syrup without mixing with the other ingredients. A spoon may be used to guide the syrup down the glass wall to the bottom of the glass with minimal mixing.
Ingredients:
- 1 (1.5 fluid ounce) Jigger Tequila
- 3/4 Cup Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice
- 1/2 (1.5 Fluid Ounces) Jigger Grenadine Syrup
- 1 Slice Orange, for Garnish
- 1 Maraschino Cherry for Garnish
- Ice Cubes
Directions:
Stir or shake together tequila and orange juice. Fill a chilled 12 ounce glass with ice cubes; pour in orange juice mixture. Slowly pour in the grenadine, and allow it to settle to the bottom of the glass (be patient). Garnish with a slice of orange, and a maraschino cherry.
